Yard Care Maintenance Check List

Kelly L. Macdonald | April 2nd, 2018

Your landscape requires regular maintenance, including mowing, watering, fertilizing and weeding, for it to thrive and look great. If you are planning on selling your home this summer, committing to a yard care schedule will ensure your home’s exterior is inviting, looks well-maintained and is attractive to potential buyers.

Spring clean up.

Give your yard the best start by cleaning it up in the spring. Rake away all the dead leaves, branches and other debris so your lawn can breathe. Each spring you should aerate, seed and fertilize your lawn. Do this yourself or hire a lawn care company to do it for you.

Pay attention to your flower beds.

Your flower beds can give your home a bright and attractive curb appeal. If you’re tired of constantly weeding your flower beds, consider installing mulch to help keep the weeds at bay. Most flowering plants do better if you remove the dead blooms as it encourages new growth.

If you want to install some planters or add some dimension to your landscape with retaining walls, hire the best landscapers in Calgary to do it for you. They can help with designing and installing the planters and landscape features and selecting the flowers and plants that will thrive in your yard’s specific conditions.

Stay on top of weed and insect control.

If your lawn is getting weeds, you can try to fix the problem by seeding and fertilizing. Sometimes when the grass is thick enough, it will choke out the weeds. Using a chemical herbicide can be tricky and you might end up killing your grass. If you choose to go that route, hire a professional lawn care company to do the job right.

The same caution applies if you’re trying to rid your lawn or garden of pesky insects. Chemical pesticides can harm your other plants, so be careful when using them. Consider using more natural methods for getting those bugs out of your garden. Learn how to use organic pesticides for gardening.

Keep the lawn lush and trim.

Make sure to cut your lawn regularly, especially if your home is on the real estate market. A shabby or out-of-control lawn will make your home look unkept and buyers might think you’ve neglected maintenance on other areas of the house. Be careful not to cut it too short as longer grass doesn’t dry out as quickly in the sun. When cutting the lawn, use the mulching option on your mower so the grass clippings get blown back onto the lawn. This will help provide additional nutrients to the soil and will reduce the amount of fertilizer you’ll have to use.
