The Fear of Downsizing
As human beings, we are all creatures of habit who do not always embrace change. Sometimes, our hesitancy becomes resistance and we have trouble getting out of our own way. For many homeowners, the prospect of downsizing is enough to cause an anxiety attack. Intellectually, nearly everyone agrees that at a certain point in life, downsizing becomes a good idea, but emotionally, it can be a difficult move to make. Here are a few of the major concerns raised by downsizing homeowners:
Where to Begin?
For someone who has lived in one home for many years, and has a lifetime of memories and accumulated possessions, the task of trading it in for a smaller one can seem overwhelming. Take everything one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask for help. Keep in mind that in addition to your Realtor, there are professional cleaners, organizers and movers available to assist.
Where Will I Put My Stuff?
Most newer single-family homes and condominiums actually have decent storage areas, but downsizing still presents a good opportunity to get rid of things you no longer use. If you have not utilized an item in the past year, you probably do not need it. Keep what is essential and will fit in your new home. Gift children and friends with stuff they may need, and sell or donate the rest. After doing so, many people report that instead of feeling down and apprehensive, they feel unburdened and exhilarated.
It's Hard to Let Go
When preparing for a big move, it may seem as if every article you come across conjures a lot of strong emotions. Instead of fretting about the loss of your stuff, seize the chance to simplify things and lighten your load. Remember that although downsizing signifies the beginning of a new stage in your life, the recollection and love you feel for friends and family will remain in your heart forever. Embrace the transition and the fresh memories you will be making along the way.
Do not let anxiety and negative feelings associated with downsizing stop you from doing what is best for you. Stay focused on all the things you plan to do with the time and money you will gain from it. With a little guidance from friends, family and professionals, you can rise to the challenge and enjoy the excitement of another chapter in your life in the comfort of your new home.
