How I Bring Out The Best In My Children

It was Children's Day on November 20, but I was so busy I missed blogging about it. Anyway, children are so special that it's their day everyday! As I watch my own kids grow up, I'm so excited to see what they will be. I know I have a very big part in how that will turn out, and I consider it a very special blessing and a great power to be able to help shape individuals. So what am I doing to try to bring out the best in my Tianna and Kyran, who are showing signs of being a talented actress or drama teacher (Tianna) and inventor/builder (Kyran)?
I let them have fun while learning.
Fun is the most natural thing for kids. Even soon after a disaster, healthy, normal children have been seen still playing. I suppose it’s their way of processing or exploring the world, and learning what they have to. Albert Einstein said it best: “Play is the highest form of research.”
My kids love to play, but I make sure their games teach them what they should because kids can be gullible. And I prod them to have a healthy Goldilocks mix – not too much and not too little -- of virtual games and real-life games, which develop different skills. Even their Mom loves to play – my favorite game is scrabble! And that’s one of the reasons why I feel I’m not aging, and I’m still learning new words! This is so true: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing” (George Bernard Shaw).
I cultivate their talents.
So your kids love to play. But at some point, it would be good to check out what they’re playing more often. Is it fashion dolls? Musical instruments? Cars? Building blocks? That will give you a pretty good idea of what they love doing; and knowing that and encouraging it are perhaps the most important things you can do to bring out the best in your children. I say that because all of us learn best and so could really excel in an area we love most. And what’s that saying again? “Do something that you love doing and you never have to work for the rest of your life.” So not only will your kids excel and be most creative and productive in that area they love, but they’ll also be happiest in it and will just be playing for the rest of their lives! Can anyone ask for more? Cultivating your kids’ passions and talents will also teach them to focus – so important in understanding things better and getting things done right and fast! – and will strengthen their self-identity and confidence.
I let them daydream.
When your kids know what they love, chances are they’ll chatter endlessly and even daydream about it. And I say, let them! (Of course, moderation is the key.) When we see something clearly, chances are we’ll understand and process it more successfully. Indeed, lots of researches have pointed out that daydreaming is another way by which children process their thoughts and feelings. And isn’t it said that visualization is a powerful tool for making dreams come true?
There are many other ways of bringing out the best in our children, but these are just my simple three. We all love our children; here’s to all they can be!
