Advice for Women on International Women's Day
March 8th will mark the 106th anniversary celebration of International Women's Day - now recognized throughout all of Canada and much of the world. This day gives us a chance to thank all the hardworking, successful women in our lives.
With the expanse of responsibilities that modern women take on in the home and in the workplace, it's a wonder how we ever have time to take care of ourselves. As a mother of two children, I am familiar with the temptation to try to make everyone around me happy while neglecting my own needs.
We owe it to ourselves and our families to make room in our hectic schedules for a little "me time." There is nothing selfish about this. Rest and relaxation are essential prerequisites to success at home and in our careers. Without proper rest, we are of little use to anyone. In addition to plenty of sleep, we also need to decompress - whether it is a spa day, a night out with friends or just a quiet cup of coffee in your neighbourhood cafe. The point is to block off time for yourself and then utilize it effectively.
If you find yourself struggling with feelings of guilt about the need to take care of your own needs first, think of it this way. We are all familiar with the airline safety briefings instructing us to put on our oxygen masks first before attending to others' needs - even our own children's. It makes perfect sense because we will not be able to help anyone if our own life is in jeopardy.
If you are anything like most working moms I know, you are probably in desperate need of some serious personal pampering as well as quality time with your children and spouse. It is important to schedule both alone and family time on a regular basis. Just knowing you have this kind of arrangement will go a long way toward reducing stress in your daily life.
Modern life is chaotic in so many aspects. Women from over a hundred years ago could probably not envision the challenges faced by today's women in balancing career and family, but I am confident that they would have been impressed by all that we have achieved.
