Why DIY drywall is bad for resale value

Kelly L. Macdonald | December 3rd, 2019

There are some DIY projects and jobs that can help improve your resale value, but then there are also some that can harm it. A DIY drywall job is one such job that can harm your resale value if not done perfectly. If you are planning to sell your home, it’s always worth investing in professional work from Calgary drywall contractors.

Bad drywall sanding means a lousy paint job.

One of the final steps, before you can paint your drywall, is the process of sanding the drywall. Once the drywall compound is applied and dried, the walls get sanded. A sanding job done correctly leaves the walls smooth and ready to paint. Done improperly though, and it can cause marks that will show through any paint. If the walls are over-sanded, you risk losing the tape covering the seams and jeopardize the integrity of the drywall. The seams will then have to be re-taped, re-mudded, and re-sanded to repair the damage.

Have you ever seen walls with noticeable seams? They almost look wavy, and the lines catch a particular light. Visible seams occur when the mudding and sanding process is not done adequately.

If you are working on finishing repairs and renovations for a quick turn-around to get your house on the market, then time is everything. Getting drywall repair in Calgary appropriately done is key to having a professional-looking wall. A fresh paint job may give the room a new look, but those under-paint blemishes and marks will undoubtedly ruin the effect.

Incorrect installation can cause future problems.

The issues may not show up until later, but if the drywall was installed incorrectly, there’s the risk of cracks and damages appearing. Finishing drywall, such as taping and applying joint compound correctly, is essential to avoid a loose wall. If done incorrectly, the drywall can eventually come loose.

On the other hand, too much or too little joint compound can result in bubbles and blisters on the drywall. Without the right amount, drywall tape has nothing to hold onto, so gaps and bubbles appear.

If your wall looks dimpled with popped screws or nails, it means the drywall is not secured to its frame correctly. This happens when the fastenings are not appropriately installed, or they were the wrong size and length.

There is no guarantee of skill.

The main difference with a contractor is that they are trained and experienced in their work. If a home inspection finds that significant repair was needed, for example, for water damage or a severe crack, a buyer will want to know it was dealt with safely.

If you want your house ready to show and sell, leave the repairs to the professional drywall companies to ensure everything is perfect. If you are still keen on DIY though, read about some other DIY projects that can add value to your home, without putting off buyers.
