School's Out! How to Be a Tourist in Your Own City
One of the greatest things about living in Calgary is that you don't have to go far to plan a fun day trip. Every year, our family makes a point to visit a few of the many attractions around the city. Here are our top five destinations in Calgary where you can plan an exciting day and be a tourist in your own city:
Calaway Park - Bumper cars and log rides are just what you need to tire the kids out. Go for the day or stay for a few nights in the campground. The midway games and live entertainment make Calaway Park a great destination for families of all ages. Planning on visiting more than once this summer? You can pick up a season pass for about $40 that will get you on all the rides all summer long.
Shakers - Laser tag, the indoor playground and the climbing wall are a huge hit with the kids when an afternoon is spent at Shakers. During the summer, there are mini-golf and go karts as well. Shakers is a popular destination for parties and will keep your kids entertained for hours.
Telus Sparks Science Centre - If your child is creative and curious, this establishment is sure to impress. Best of all, it's lots of fun for the grownups as well. There are so many amazing exhibits this year including Earth & Sky, Energy & Innovation, and the Open Studio where kids can stretch their creative muscles.
Calgary Zoo - The Calgary Zoo has fully re-opened after the flood, and the lions, tigers and bears are as ready for the summer as you are. This tourist attraction is too good to miss and there is so much to see and do. The Calgary Zoo and the Telus Sparks Centre have partnered to offer a flex pass that allows you to visit both establishments for a discounted price.
Millennium Park -If your kids love skateboarding or BMX bikes, Millennium Park is a must-do. Located on the west end of downtown, this park features half-pipes, ledges and lots of other exciting (and scary) places for the kids to practice their skills. Pack some Band-Aids and a good book, and enjoy the beautiful weather as you get the most out of your city during the summer holidays.
