Calgary’s Hidden Gems
In every town around the world, there are those special places few outsiders know about. Old eateries, parks tucked away off the beaten path, or quirky landmarks -- these are the types of things that contribute to the personality of a community. Locals of any town love to share what makes their area unique, and Calgary has an abundance of hidden gems to make our residents proud.
If you want to eat like a local, then there’s a few places not to be missed. Spolumbo’s Deli, owned by three Italian-Canadian guys who were also football players, is reputed to have the best sausage in town. Some Calgarians say Smuggler’s Inn is “the greatest place on Earth for prime rib”. The Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant is in a 19th century rancher's, William Roper Tull, spectacular mansion and focuses on locally acquired ingredients. Cool and quirky Rocky’s Burgers serves its menu out of a funky, red bus. Colourful and bright, the Calgary Farmers’ Market off of Blackfoot Trail features local goods, crafts, and food kiosks.
Calgary’s beautiful natural setting also holds many parks often missed by outsiders. Moose Mountain is a haven for mountain bike enthusiasts. Although 45 minutes from town, it’s well worth the trip. Dog sledding is an activity which is foreign to much of the world, but at Kanananskis Country you can experience this traditional Canadian adventure.
Many cities have zoos, but Calgary Zoo is special. It has rescued several indigenous bears, many of whom have been victims of habitat encroachment by humans. Skoki -- a majestic, male grizzly -- is Calgary Zoo’s star. He was rescued and is considered the zoo’s ambassador for increasing awareness of the importance of these gorgeous animals.
This list doesn’t even begin to reveal all the local gems Calgary has to offer. To get to the heart of what is great about our city, ask a local to show you around!
